One Tree Project

One tree is a project that traces the journey of a certified tree from the forest of an indigenous Miskito speaking community on Nicaraguas Atlantic coast to the hands of craftsman, artists and sculptors, a journey that ends in an exhibition of everything that came from the tree in Managua. In doing the project we wanted to demystify the wood industry showing people were wood came from, how you process it and its great versatility. We also wanted a visual way of telling people about the shinking forest, overexploitation, bad forestry practices and the threat that this is for the country. One Tree Project finished with a week long exhibition attended by more that 2000 school children, as well as a documentary film which as shown on national TV, and a book that tells the story. (you can support the Miskito community of Layasiksa by purchasing a copy of the One tree book)

One thing that has come out of the project is an appreciation of real wood - by that I mean wood with all its characteristics, splits and knots and funny bits and real edges - the bits which normally go up in smoke as well as the bits that find there way into furniture.
